Dear Bhal Chandra I am very saddened to know about passing away of Nikolai.

He was an outstanding astronomer, very innovative. Also very friendly to all of us in India. I request you to convey our condolences to his family and colleagues.

I greatly remember meeting him on the occasion of 30th year of Sputnik that he made it possible. I and Ananth met many astronauts. On that occasion, I was delighted to meet my old friend and colleague Owen Gariott from Stanford, who later became an astronaut in the Skylab and discovered coronal holes in the Sun.

On that occasion, Nikolai also arranged giving me prestigious Tkosolovosky medal.

Dear BCJ,

Thanks for the info. Kola was such a nice person and was one of my mentors during the 80's and 90's when I was involved in VLBI expts. He enabled my trip to Moscow for the 30th year of Sputnik. Both Govind and I attended the celebrations.

I met Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova and even got a photo-op with her!

Academician Nikolai was very respected in Russia and contributed enormously to the Soviet space astronomy programme by heading the Radioastron project (it was his idea) and a great friend of Ken Kellerman. Last time I met him was in 1994.

He became famous for his paper on Civilizations elsewhere, which are more advanced than us.

No occasion arose for me after 1994 to visit Russia. Our 327 MHz front end was sent

via one of the young engineers. Praveen also visited Moscow.

I will write to Yuri. Great memories of Kola! May his soul rest in peace.

Thanks again.

Dear Kovalev-san,

I express my deepest condolences on his loss.

It was a great shock for the loss of such a giant. I met him often in the meetings on Japanese space VLBI VSOP, and once he invited us to Moscow for a VSOP meeting.  Our VSOP team had been working hard, looking at the progress of RadioAstron.  The last time I met him was a few years ago, probably in an IAU meeting.  At that time, he mentioned there should be Type IV civilization, as I asked his comments on my article on the Type III civilization.  I remember his warm smile.

May he rest in pease.

Dear Yuri,

the sad news that Nikolai has passed away has been circulated by Gabriele Giovannini at our Instite. I have been acquainted with Nikolai since a long, long time, and then in 1987 at IKI when we signed the MoU for collaboration in RADIOASTRON, myself on behalf of the EVN (picture attached), and then again in the year 2000 at the Academy of the Lincei in Rome for the meeting celebrating the 70 birthday of Lo Woltjer, but I still regret that unfortunately I was unable to accept Nikolai's invitation for the conference celebrating the 100 years of I.S. Shklovsky. So we didn't many chances to actually meet through the years but in rare occasions and always with great pleasure, but we kept in regular contact by exchanging email messages. It's a great loss of an outstanding scientist and highly estimated colleague.

Could you please forward my sentiments of deepest sorrow to His family, institutions and collaborators.

With kindest regards

Giancarlo

RE: Nikolai Kardashev

Dear Yuri,

This is very sad news. Nikolai was a giant in astronomy, and someone I respected greatly. I remember the first time I met him to talk about space VLBI. It was in Budapest at the IKI equivalent there, in September 1983. I had been invited to an informal meeting between IKI and ESA by Ernst Trendelenberg who was Director of Science (or something like that) at ESA. Giancarlo Setti, then EVN Board Chair, also took part. That was the first I had heard about RadioAstron, and it was the start of the collaboration that led to the 6cm receiver project, and my involvement in RadioAstron.

As other people have said, his scientific insight, leadership, and his friendliness towards his fellow scientists will remain with us as his enduring legacy.

With best wishes,

Richard

Subject: Kardashev

Dear Yuri, Dear Leonid – I was (and still am) on holiday when the news about Prof Kardashev came through. I apologise for not contacting you earlier.

Prof. Kardashev was an inspiration to myself, and many others in the SETI community. I did not know him well, I was honoured to shake his hand at the Radioastron meeting ca. 2007? but was too shy to talk to him directly. I did have email contact with him over various SETI issues. I took this picture of him with Bernie Burke at the RA meeting (attached).

He struck me as a very kind and beautiful person. He inspired me to be unorthodox, as much as that is possible in our current scientific and political environment.

We will miss his huge intellect and capacity to think freely enormously.

Best regards,

Mike.
